Forestry

So, I was thinking of creating a google doc with all the information but then I thought it might better to use this resource that we have right now. So, as soon as I get info, I will post it online.

Peace,

http://www.iied.org/pubs/ : So, this is an organization that does reports commissioned by the World Bank. I found an incredibly interesting policy document here. Check it out.

Brilliant idea Lil! speaking of which... can I call you Lil? I never really asked I just took the liberty of hacking your name in half and using the term liberally...

So, here is a great website with a whole mess of info.
http://iucn.org/ - this is the website, information that I think Professor Chatterji was talking about that we need to use. It's super easy to use, you just search the country/area of your choice and BOOM! it pops up. I would also recommend just looking up the country without necessarily the 'forestry' or 'deforestation' as an addition to get some great environmental background information and even info about forestry.

Also, the website below has a lot of really great information from pre-2001 in the state department - it's all pretty Bush but a great resource:
http://www.state.gov/www/global/oes/envir.html#forests

And: here is a link to the full Forestry report by the Intergovenmental Panel on Climate Change website:
http://www.ipcc.ch/ipccreports/sres/land_use/index.htm - It discusses land use, land-use change and forestry

And I have a lot of El Salvador/Central American specific information if you want that, but, I figured that I shouldn't necessarily post it all since we should be posting general stuff, unless folk want me to post it. . . . anyway, have a great day!

thank you for the info, Lil.
unfortunately i didn't find the sites all that easy to navigate. on the iucn page where did you do your search?

http://iucn.org/resources/publications/publications_search/index.cfm - This is the direct link to their searchable documents, publications and position papers. It's under the 'Resources' tab and then 'search documents/publications'

thanks for the resources, lil!! I am going crazy with downloading all of these PDFs of policy I keep finding...mmm...information. :o)

I came across a website that might be of some use...it's a subsidiary of the World Bank and it's the "Energy Sector Management Assistance Program" (www.esmap.org)...it's all about energy/poverty and has a bunch of different planning-related docs. I found a cool one about energy-saving stoves in Haiti (hmm, where have we heard that before?)

I have some PDFs that talk excessively about El Salvador and/or Trinidad that I found - Lil and Emiko, if you want I can e-mail them to you?

I'm feeling kinda overloaded by information...I need direction!

jesus Samantha! i could TOTALLY use some more information. i'm having a hard time tracking down policies. what i've come up with is a policy to protect the narvia swamp. - but are we not suppose to find policies for which there is a social movement against? i feel like i'm having a difficult time understanding that assignment... argg!!! can i buy you a cup of coffee and we can talk?

Thanks Samantha for the site! It didn't directly help me but it helped to lead me to many other places that were more dam related... like WTO's website, IMF's and the World bank they all have very easy search engines that actually brought up an article or two I can use! yay! I recommend these sites to all...

Thanks again!

oh and samantha at first glance I thought your picture was a vagina heh...

Jocie! Mind out of the gutter! Those are my dirty hippie feet after dancing around at Michael Franti. :P It's hard to take a picture of the bottom of your own feet, but I thought they signified...something.

Emiko, I'll send you the stuff I found. I don't have any policy documents OR any resistance movements for myself. Actually, a lot of the stuff I've found having to do with resistance has to do with dams in Haiti...I wonder if I should switch just to make it easier on myself....

I would be willing to talk after class tomorrow if you want but I'll admit that I don't have much either. For yours, if there is a policy to protect the Narvia swamp, then I'm wondering what's going on that it needs protecting and who is advocating for protection, and what has been done in the past that it's such a mess? Dig a little bit deeper and maybe you'll find something....?

Samantha-
Hey! I agree I have a dirty mind, and after you explained what the pic is from makes it all the more sentimental and deep.. in a sense...

Anyway, I also agree that you should make the switch to the DAM side... I'll even inaugurate you by emailing you the 300 page commission on dams report! :) It comes fully equipped with the dissent letter Chatterji was talking about in class.

In fact... that goes to anyone that may want the report :)

good luck to all...

So, I was looking up info about El Salvador and the IUCN and I came across something called IUCN categories I-VI for the protection of protected area. And I did some more research and here is what I found: Around the documentation about IUCN categories I -VI that I came across with definitions (still very confusing though): http://groups.google.com/group/wcpamarine-summit/web/preparing-for-the-iucn-categories-summit?pli=1

and here is how you search for countries that use IUCN categories in the maintenance of their protected areas:

Let me know if it's helpful.
